Job Description

Salary range £13725 to £17230 pa dependent on experience. Closing Date: 19th September 2010

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

Stores is a busy environment which operates goods inwards and portering services to the Institute. We are a team of nine staff made up of a stores manager, materials controller and part time administrator along with a stores supervisor and six stores persons who throughout the day process vast numbers of deliveries and stock consumable requests to delivery points around the site. Through good stock management we provide lab stocks from plates, petri dishes and tubes through to high throughput, high value stocks of sequencing and genotyping kits which are fundamental to our production pipelines here at the Institute.

Stores also operates a counter service to the scientific and administrative end users 5 days a week and stores staff provide the shop front that is needed for end users to collect their perishable deliveries, make urgent requests for stock and make product or order enquiries.

Stores persons work on a 6 week rota system which assigns individuals to stores tasks for a week at a time. All staff are trained across all tasks to ensure that our service levels are maintained to the highest standard at all times. Through intense mentoring and on the job training we offer a development path to encourage staff to use their own initiative with little or no supervision.

Essential Skills Store keeping experience and good housekeeping practices are essential.

Applicants should have demonstrable previous experience and exhibit a keen interest in the job. They should be able to work as part of a team as well as being able to work alone and use their own initiative.

On the job training will be provided but the applicant should have the skills and knowledge to operate e-procurement systems and other databases accurately. They must adhere to and understand all stores Standard Operating Procedures and should be equipped to give basic knowledge to others.

Applicants should be able to problem solve and make basic decisions with minimum supervision. The applicant must be reliable and a good performer.

Applicants must be able to communicate and interact well with our internal customers, purchasing department, delivery drivers and suppliers in a professional manner at all times.

Applicants must hold a current driving licence.

Ideal Skills

Good IT skills and being familiar with computer systems is desirable
